Lasers have been in dentistry now for a good number of years. We have been using lasers in our offices for close to 10 years. What is new in laser dentistry is that now the dental lasers have gotten much better and much less expensive. As a result, it is within the realm of all dentists to now begin to integrate laser technology into their dental practice. This is no different than any other technology that continues to improve and also becomes more efficient and less costly.

Since the late 1950s, the use of ultrasonic technology has become a staple in endodontic practices around the world for hygiene and periodontal procedures. More recently, endodontists have introduced us to the clinical advantages of their use in root canal therapy, and we are just beginning to see their effectiveness for endo-restorative and microrestorative work.

This article will review the expanded function that ultrasonic technology has taken in root canal therapy, why piezoelectric technology is well matched to endodontics, current clinical uses and advances in both ultrasonic equipment and tips, and some of the science behind the technology.

The practice of endodontics is currently in a period of rapid evolutionary advancement. This article is the first in a 3-part series that will outline the areas of endodontics that have received the most revolutionary improvements. This first article illustrates cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and its impact on our ability to 3-dimensionally diagnose and treat complex root canal systems. The second article will review the recent advances in disinfection that have brought us closer to our goal of completely disinfecting the root canal system. Finally, the third article in this series will illustrate recent advances in our ability to provide a precise and consistent 3-dimensional (3-D) seal of the entire root canal system from the apex to the cavosurface.

Modern endodontic treatment has been shaped by revolutionary improvements in our armamentarium. This article is the second in a 3-part series that highlights the areas of endodontics that have been impacted the most by these recent advances. This second article illustrates advances in disinfection that contribute to a more thorough, 3-D disinfection of the entire root canal system. Solving Aesthetic Challenges Due to Gingival Recession

Автор:Author: Frank J. Milnar, DDS
an accredited member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry,
author of articles about the direct composites, shade selection, porcelain materials.

Cervical lesions and gingival recession present major challenges to dentists, as many patients present with some form of this dental issue. With this, gingival surgery is often required with a referral to a periodontist and gum surgery to correct the aesthetic deficiencies caused by the gingival assymetry. Aside from the cost, recovery, and pain to the patient, general dentists also lose potential income. With the development of new gingiva-shaded composite resin materials, general dentists can now directly apply these to the cervical area of the tooth/teeth to correct the appearance of gingival recession.
